The Appalachian Mountain Club Highland Center and The Carriage House, located at Crawford Notch, New Hampshire serve as a conference center with full lodging and dining facilities.
Heat is provided using locally harvested wood that is burned in a Garn boiler, which is located in small building between the Highland Center and the Carriage House. The Garn boiler is a water storage boiler that burns whole or split four foot logs, and transfers the energy to a large 3200-gallon water tank that surrounds the combustion chamber. Pumps circulate the heated water to both buildings. The storage ability means that the boiler can be fired and then allowed to “coast” during warmer weather. Two oil-fired cast iron high efficiency Buderas boilers provide back up. Heat is provided by Runtal radiation in the exterior rooms. High efficiency Energy Recovery Units provide ventilation to the spaces.
