Buildings with mostly exposed mechanical system space and that have high, varying ventilation requirements can pose a challenge to providing energy efficiency and comfort, while maintaining architectural style. With an open fireplace, a large kitchen and exposed trusses on the main entry level, The Dartmouth Skiway Lodge was just such a challenge.

Four Energy Kinetic boilers provide heat and domestic hot water. Unit ventilators were used to provide heat, ventilation and make-up air for the large open spaces of the main level. Runtal radiation trims the bay window areas of the offices and administration. In the lower rental equipment and locker room area, an energy recovery unit supplies fresh air, and provides exhaust.

This approach eliminated the need for ductwork, and visually dominating, central supply mechanical units did not sacrifice the architectural layout and ambiance of a ski lodge. The subtle presence of the terminal units maintain comfort without disrupting room appearance.
